First we will visit Eyam, the beautiful, historic plague village in the Derbyshire Peak District. The Great Plague arrived from London at the village in a parcel of cloth infested with fleas. This tragic tale is one of self sacrifice. The village decided to cut itself off from the outside world. They effectively agreed to quarantine themselves even though it would mean death for many of them. In the afternoon visit The home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. During 2010 Chatsworth will stage a special exhibition in honour of the 90th birthday of the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, Deborah Cavendish, the last surviving member of the famous Mitford sisters. It marks nine eventful decades of her life and illustrates her many interests and achievements. The exhibition will comprise of fascinating personal material, much of which has never been seen before, and also a selection of her couture dresses, including the coronation robe worn to the Queen’s coronation in 1953. This year will also see the unveiling of a new visitor route around the house, and you will see some fascinating rooms that have been restored or are on view for the first time, plus exciting new displays of rare treasures.
