Railways of the North East

Join us for a unique experience of a bygone era. Apart from the pleasure of stepping back in time to a different pace and quality of life, these trains steam through some of the most spectacular scenery in the North East. Relax and enjoy the leisurely pace, giving you time to absorb the stunning landscape, alongside river banks, through unspoilt countryside and scenic valleys.

Day 1 Departure: 0700-0800 hrs. Making a lunch stop en-route (cost not included). In the afternoon, enjoy a scenic ride on the South Tynedale Railway, through the beautiful South Tyne valley from Alston station. Travel to Kirkhaugh, Lintley Halt and back on one of the trains hauled by vintage steam or diesel locomotives through lovely Pennine scenery. The journey to Alston, which lies at the crossroads of five routes, takes you through the stunning landscape of the North Pennines Area of Natural Beauty (AONB). Facilities include café, the Discovery Centre and the old Railway Shop. Hotel check-in. Dinner is included for the next 2 nights. 
Day 2 Heatherslaw Light Railway. A 15 inch gauge railway, pulled by steam locomotives “Bunty” and “Lady Augusta” to diesel engine “Binky”, between Heatherslaw Station and Etal Castle on a return journey of 4 miles. The rolling stock offers fully enclosed or partly glazed coaches. The railway runs along the banks of the River Till giving you stunning views of the Northumberland countryside. We break the journey at Etal Station, giving you the chance to visit Etal Castle, or walk the short distance up to Etal Village with its thatched cottages and pub, or maybe visit the Lavender Tearoom for refreshments, before catching a later train back to Heatherslaw.
Day 3 Depart hotel, travel to Battersby and take the Esk Valley Railway to Whitby. This railway connects the rural communities in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, passing through pretty, remote farming villages, amongst leafy valleys and stunning landscapes. Free time for lunch in Whitby (cost not included). Arrive home: late-evening.

Lumley Castle Hotel, Chester-Le-Street
A unique and inspirational venue, this is no ordinary hotel. The magnificent spectacle of Lumley Castle is a splendid monument of a bygone age of chivalry and honour. Located in 9 acres of parkland, 10 minute walk to Chester-Le-Street and 8 miles from Durham. The origins of this magnificently preserved hotel go back to the 9th Century, although the main building dates back to the 14th Century. It has been carefully refurbished and is now an international hotel offering an exciting blend of ancient history and modern luxury. It combines rustic charm and old beams with subdued lighting, hidden corridors and secret passages, which enhance the delightful atmosphere!

Bedrooms: En-suite with TV, telephone, tea/coffee making facilities, hairdryer, iron and ironing board.
All bedrooms are located in the courtyard (originally the stable block), immediately adjacent to the Castle.
Facilities: Bar and lounge. Night porter. Hotel porter service is at extra cost.
Mobility Information: 3 floors in the castle, 2 floors in the courtyard. Lift only to 1st floor dining rooms. Limited ground floor bedrooms. Various steps throughout the hotel.
