‘Call the Midwife’ Film Location – Chatham Historic Dockyard

With BBC One’s popular Sunday night drama ‘Call the Midwife’ returning onto our TV screens this week, why not take a guided tour of Chatham Historic Dockyard in Kent – the film location which has transformed countless times to 1950’s and 60’s East End, Poplar Dock, since 2012.

With millions of viewers each episode, discover the fascinating exterior filming location on the 80-acre site for yourself on a 90-minute leisurely walking tour led by a costumed ‘midwife’. You will follow in the footsteps of the characters as you walk along the recognisable cobbles and past the slums and warehouses, hear facts from the filming of the show, and learn behind-the-scenes stories and new locations which were introduced in 2016.

After the tour, take the time to explore the rest of the historic site – making it an unmissable experience to bring the series to life.

Woods Tours have a day trip to Chatham Historic Dockyard or Call the Midwife Tour on Sunday 14th May 2017. Please call 0116 278 6374 for further information.

NEW for 2017! Made famous by Tommy Steele – Half a Sixpence

NEW for 2017! Made famous by Tommy Steele – Half a Sixpence

As always, we have a great choice of day trips to top theatre shows for 2017 – whether that’s an old favourite or a brand new musical.

You may not know that Half a Sixpence, based on H.G. Well’s novel Kipps: The Story of a Simple Soul, has transferred to the West End this year for the first time in 50 years following rave reviews at Chichester Theatre.

The musical comedy launched Tommy Steele’s international theatre and film career, but this new stage version is a perfect old school musical with Julian Fellowes’s clever take on the novel (the Oscar-winning screenwriter most famous as the creator of Downton Abbey). It is also co-produced by Cameron Mackintosh, the producer of hugely successful shows such as Les Miserables and Miss Saigon, and features songs from the original production in 1963 including 'Flash Bang Wallop', 'Money to Burn' and 'Half A Sixpence’.

It tells the tale of Arthur Kipps, an orphan who dreams of a better world. But what will happen when he unexpectedly inherits a fortune that propels him into high society? The story sees him wrestling with his new identity to choose between his childhood companion Ann Pornick and the wealthy Helen Walsingham.

Whatever your age, this typically British musical is guaranteed to warm audiences with its feel-good story – hurry as this show is only set to run until February!

Woods Coaches have a day trip to Half a Sixpence on Wednesday 1st February 2017. Please click here for more information or to make a booking.

Day trip to the UK’s City of Culture 2017!

If you recently saw the thousands who gathered along Hull’s river bank for a spectacular display of fireworks over the Humber on New Year’s Day, you’ll know the city has now officially begun a year of celebrations for the world to discover its vibrant scene of artists, innovations and talents – and perhaps it’s got you thinking about visiting this dynamic Northern city for yourself.

Whilst Hull may not have always been the first place that brought to mind culture, creativity and history, it won the title of the UK’s City of Culture 2017 beating the likes of Leicester and Dundee.  From January to March the theme is ‘Made in Hull’, celebrating over 70 years of history from theatre and music to great architecture, focusing on the city’s innovations and contributions to the world to show visitors the hidden culture. Learn more about Hull’s poets, writers and musicians with plenty of events taking place throughout the city to welcome visitors from all over the globe.

The city has gone from strength to strength over the years and has everything from St Stephen’s Shopping Centre, to The Deep, one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world housed in a futuristic aluminium building. It is also home to a dynamic museum quarter and a brand new free gallery, Humber Street Galley.

Whatever you choose to do, a day trip to Hull is one not to be missed this year.
