NEW for 2017! The Postal Museum

Did you know the new Postal Museum opened to visitors this summer? The Post Office’s abandoned underground railway in London is now an eagerly anticipated tourist attraction and promises to bring the history of this iconic service to life, where five centuries of communications can be yours to discover on our day trip.

Did you know…?

  • The Post Office Mail Rail was the world’s first driverless electric railway.
  • The plans evolved in the 1900s, as congested streets and fog meant that mail transported between Post Offices and railway stations in London was severely delayed. By 1911, the construction of a driverless train was recommended and work began in 1914.
  • The tunnels were used during the First World War to store and protect art treasures belonging to the National Portrait Gallery and the Tate Gallery.
  • From 1927, it operated deep beneath the streets of London – it stretched 6 ½ miles from Paddington to Whitechapel.
  • At its peak, the pioneering tunnels carried more than four million letters silently below ground every day.
  • It closed for good in 2003, and has since been frozen in time from its last day in service and maintained by just three engineers.

Today the Postal Museum is an incredible opportunity to take an immersive subterranean ride through a part of the original underground tunnels.
